Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Muddler (optional)
  • Glass (preferably a margarita glass or a highball glass)
  • Citrus juicer (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces fresh blood orange juice
  • 1 ounce tequila preferably blanco
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur like Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 3 ounces sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice
  • Blood orange slices for garnish
  • Lime wedges for garnish
  • Coarse salt or sugar for rimming the glass, optional

Instructions

  • Prepare the Glass: If you like a salted or sugared rim, rub a lime wedge around the edge of your glass and dip it into coarse salt or sugar. Set aside.
  • Juice the Blood Oranges: Cut the blood oranges in half and juice them until you have about 2 ounces of fresh juice. You can use a citrus juicer for this if you have one.
  • Mix the Cocktail: In a cocktail shaker, combine the blood orange juice, tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice. If you want a bit more flavor, you can muddle a few slices of blood orange in the shaker before adding the liquids.
  • Shake It Up: Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well chilled.
  • Strain and Serve: Strain the mixture into the prepared glass filled with ice.
  • Add Bubbles: Top off the cocktail with the sparkling water, gently stirring to combine.
  • Garnish: Add a slice of blood orange and a lime wedge for garnish. Enjoy your refreshing drink!
